Rome is the capital of Italy. It has been an important city in European history since its mythical founding in 753 B.C, especially during its time as the center of the Roman Empire and until this day as the seat of the Pope. Rome has a huge number of important historical buildings and squares, some of the world's most important cultural and archaeological treasures, and most famous tourist sights.
Rome is not the obvious choice for a family holiday, but rather the perfect destination for cultured urban holidays and romantic weekends. The tourist season runs from March until November, excluding July and August, during which the city can become unpleasantly hot, and December until February, where the city can be chilly and rainy. Yet visiting during winter can be recommended, since the city is less packed with tourists and the weather is relatively warm and dry compared to the harsher and wetter winters of Northern and Central Europe.
